In October 2014, Sumitomo Electric is launching its new BreakMaster LD type
and GD type sintered diamond cutting tools with integral chipbreaker, which
provide outstanding chip control over a wide range of aluminum alloy machining
applications, from finishing through to semi-finishing.
Sintered diamond cutting tools are used in the machining of
automotive components, aerospace components and electronics components. They are
particularly widely used for machining aluminum alloy components such as engine
blocks, gearbox casing and chassis.
Over the past few years, companies in the automotive and aerospace
industries have been responding to rising fuel costs by striving to reduce the
weight of components, and there has been increased use of lightweight,
non-ferrous-metal materials such as aluminum alloy and CFRP (Carbon
Fiber-reinforced Plastic). However, when using softer materials like aluminum
alloy, the amount of chips or swarf produced tends to increase, and if chips get
caught up in the material being worked or in the tools used during the machining
process, this can result in stoppages to automatic production machinery, and
becomes an obstacle to the maintenance of stable, efficient machining
operations. To help solve this problem, Sumitomo Electric has launched the
BreakMaster LD type and GD type sintered diamond cutting tools with integral
chipbreaker.*1
1.Special Features of the BreakMaster LD type and
GD type
-
(1)Superb chip control for a wide range of aluminum alloy machining
applications, from finishing to semi-finishing
-
By forming a three-dimensional chipbreaker on the sintered diamond next to
the cutting edge, outstanding chip control is achieved in the machining of
aluminum alloy components (an area where chip control has tended to be a problem
in the past), from finishing to semi-finishing. The BreakMaster LD type is
specially designed for use in finishing applications, while the GD type is
designed for use in semi-finishing applications, permitting precise removal of
chips across a wide range of machining requirements, and facilitating a
substantial improvement in operational efficiency.
-
(2)The use of SUMIDIA DA1000 high-strength sintered diamond ensures
high-precision, highly efficient machining
-
By using SUMIDIA DA1000 high-strength sintered diamond (made by high-density
sintering of ultra-fine diamond) as the cutting edge material, BreakMaster
provides superb chipping resistance and outstanding abrasion resistance for
aluminum alloy machining applications, making it possible to achieve stable,
high-precision, highly efficient finishing.
